How Good are LED Lights for Outdoor Use?

Nov 4, 2021

Outdoor lighting fixtures come in many shapes and sizes, but they all need proper installation. LED lights are becoming increasingly popular in outdoor lighting, but there are some misconceptions about LEDs in outdoor fixtures. Let’s clear up this topic.

What Makes LED’s Good for Outdoor Use?

LED lights are more than good; they’re practically ideal for any outdoor lighting system. LED lighting fixtures have nearly the same benefits outdoors as indoors, but with the bonus of greater energy efficiency. Here’s what you get with an LED bulb:

LED’s Are More Efficient

Incandescent and metal-halide lamps produce a lot of heat, which is wasted energy. These lamps only use 10%-15% of their energy effectively, and the excess heat can cause electrical circuits to burn out faster. This leads to more frequent lamp replacement costs that would otherwise be unnecessary with LEDs.

On the other hand, LED light bulbs make use of energy-efficient technology to output nearly all light. This means that there’s little to no waste in the form of heat. They are consequently the most energy-efficient lighting option available today.

LED’s Stay Clear and Bright

If you’re using traditional outdoor incandescent light bulbs, you should know that they lose their original light’s color and clarity as time goes on. As they age, they start burning out. They turn visibly orange or even pink. In some cases, you’ll notice that the light itself becomes blurry.

LED’s Have Greater Longevity

LED light bulbs have a lifespan of 7,500-15,000 hours, depending on the quality. In comparison, traditional incandescent bulbs have a lifespan of 700-1000 hours. This means that an LED bulb will last for many more years and, therefore, will reduce replacement costs.

Lower Operating Costs

One of the reasons that LEDs are great is that they use a lot less energy than traditional light bulbs while they produce the same number of lumens (a.i., brightness). LEDs can produce 1100 lumens using 9 watts of power, about 75% less than the power used by a 75-watt incandescent bulb. This saves you money on your electricity bill, so switching to LED-based light bulbs will save you considerable money.

Many Different Types of LED Lamps

There are many different types of LED lamps to pick from. Very often, fixtures require different size lamps. There are a variety of options with lamps, such as sizes, beam spread, wattage, using filters, lamp color or kelvins, and color-changing or simple white lights. The diversity in LED lamps has given the industry lots of room to be creative in the field. Choosing the right LED lamp can be tricky but as soon as you find what works it really blows the other lamps out of the water.

LED-based light bulbs are a true breakthrough. They provide cost-effective, clean, and high-quality light that can be used for any indoor or outdoor fixture. There is no doubt that LEDs have changed the outdoor lighting world for the better.
